Our Houghton-Mifflin Spelling Program begins this week. Each Monday you will find the list of weekly spelling words and challenge words in your child’s homework packet. Throughout the week we will do many activities with these words at school. In addition, your child will need to review these words at home.
Each Monday, students will be given a pre-spelling test on the regular spelling words. Final spelling tests will be given on Friday. On Friday, students will be tested on five challenge words or high frequency words (HFW) of my choosing. While I will correct the challenge or HF words, these scores will be recorded for extra credit!
Students must be able to spell and print the words correctly – in lower case letters. Neatness counts on the test, and letters must be formed correctly. Even if your child can verbally spell the words correctly, it is a good idea to have him/her practice writing the words, too.
In addition to the regular spelling words and challenge words, I will also be dictating one sentence each week. I will be looking for capitalization at the beginning of the sentence, accurate punctuation, two finger spacing between words - as well as correct letter formation and spelling.
Once words are presented on our list of regular spelling words, these words are considered “sight words”, and students are expected to correctly spell these words in their daily writing.
