At Oak Creek, we have adopted the Houghton-Mifflin Language Arts curriculum. Writing strategies, grammar usage, mechanics, listening and speaking skills are integrated into our Language Arts program through morning message, journal writing, and directed writing lessons. There are 10 themes that will be presenting over the course of the year. The students will be formally tested on the skills presented in these themes 10 times (at the end of each theme-approximately every 4 weeks). The tests that are given are created by Houghton-Mifflin and support what they children are learning in class. Giving these tests helps the first grade teachers to alter, adapt and refine what they are teaching in class and it allows the teachers to gain feedback regarding the retention of what is being taught. In addition to the theme skills tests, authentic assessment activities allow students to show off their knowledge of the California State Standards in writing and integrate their individual skills to create a finished product. Authentic Assessment is important because it emphasizes skills that are central to our school curriculum. An Authentic Assessment will be given to students three times this year through a formal writing assignment that will be completed in class. Authentic Assessment helps students, parents, and teachers focus on expected outcomes and enable us all to work together.
