Week of: Feb. 6 - 10 , 2012

Language Arts: We will begin Unit 6 entitled “Animal Adventures.”  Students will be summarizing their reading and comprehending story structure.  They will practice counting the sounds in words.  In phonics, students will be reading (and spelling) words with the long o sound, the long u sound, and final clusters ft, lk, and nt.   High frequency words for the week include cow, table, now, door, there, through, horse, and wall.  Grammar lessons entail naming words for people and animals.

Math:  We will wrap up Chapter 4 this week in math with a unit test on Friday.  We will review adding tens and ones and solving story problems.

Social Studies:  Students will complete a variety of activities entailing American Symbols.  This week’s symbols include the Bald Eagle, the White House, Uncle Sam, and the Statue of Liberty.   We will also learn about our First and Sixteenth Presidents: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Health: The Great Body Shop Lessons

Upcoming Events:

·          Jog-A-Thon- March 8th! All students must turn in a signed permission slip (located in each student’s jog-a-thon envelope coming home this week) in order to participate.  If you are able to volunteer, please turn in the yell volunteer sheet with your name and phone number –Thank you!!!! J

·         Don’t forget to bring in your Valentine Holder on Friday or next Tuesday!  Remember if you are sharing Valentines to bring them Tuesday, Feb. 14 for our exchange!!

• March 2^nd is “Read Across America Day” in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  If  you would like to participate in a 1-hour morning classroom rotation (reading a book   to three different classes), please contact, Sue Doomey (sdoomey@iusd.org) or stop   by the library and let her know!

• Mark your calendars!!!  Ruby’s Family Fun Night is scheduled for Feb.16^th!  Come support your first grade class with dine in or dine out!  J
