Library Curriculum
The purpose of the library curriculum is to enable students to access, evaluate, and use information efficiently and effectively. The Our Lady of the Assumption School Library's curriculum standards are based on the standards set forth by the American Association of School Librarians, the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, and the Massachusetts School Library Association.

With the above goals in mind, the library curriculum is centered around the Big6 Information Literacy Model. This model was developed by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz. It is the most widely known and widely used approach to teaching information and technology skills in the world. Many schools, higher education institutions, and corporate and adult training programs use the Big6 information problem solving model because it is applicable whenever people need and use information. The model integrates information search and use skills along with technology tools in a systematic process to find, use, apply, and evaluate information for specific needs and tasks (Eisenberg, M., A Big6 Skills Overview. http://www.big6.com/showarticle.php?id=16).

Students may also participate in the Scholastic's Reading Counts program. Scholastic's Reading Counts is a software program that manages and motivates independent reading.

Students read books and take computerized quizzes. For each quiz that a student passes, he/she earns points. To receive a Scholastic's Reading Counts award, students must acquire the number of Reading Counts points listed below. The points earned must be at the student's individual lexile/reading level.
