Homework Homework

Homework is assigned to provide practice and reinforcement of skills learned in the classroom, develop a sense of personal responsibility, encourage self-discipline, and extend each student’s ability to work independently. Even though we are striving to learn independence, your student may need assistance with homework on occasion. For example, during the writing process, your help during brainstorming and editing steps are greatly appreciated. When answering your students’ questions, try asking questions that help lead them to discovering an answer for themselves. If there is something you have both tried to solve and are unable to, please sign the homework so that we know that they did seek help. The main support we ask of parents is to reinforce the concept that homework is important, to confirm that assignments are entered into the planner, and to verify that homework is completed. The amount of time spent on homework can vary, especially if incomplete work from the day is added, but 1- 1 ½ hours each night is appropriate. There will be minimal homework assigned on Friday nights and occasionally there will be long-term assignments which need to be addressed on the weekend. If completing an adequate number of reading pages each week is difficult, spreading it over seven days instead of four can be beneficial.
