Welcome 2010! A new year is here and with it new hopes and challenges. As the Speech-Language Pathologist, your children have been seeing me in classrooms this year. By integrating speech and language services into the classroom I am able to help children with the critical skills they need, while also working on their specific speech and language skills. I am also having a few preschool, and lower elementary language groups in my room. In addition, Mrs. Ruscito and I are co-leading a Language and Social Skills group for 3 and 4 year olds. This is a new and an exciting venture! If you have any questions about your child's speech or language please contact me. These are the critical years. You may also hear your children say they are learning a little sign language this year. As a certified interpreter for deaf, I'm working with a few classroom teachers to add sign where we can. Research shows that using sign can assist with learning - and it certainly is using another mind-body connection! As the School Social Worker, I am available to children and families for a wide array of services. You may see me at your child's team meeting, conferences, RTI or IEP meetings. I am always available to assist your family with issues that challenge you, and us, as a community. Because of the economic situation in the state, many families find themselves struggling to make ends meet. I can help you connect with services that may be available to you and your family. Some families may also find they their children qualify for reduced or free lunch. Please check out this opportunity as well. As I have done in the past, and at their request, I will be having informal lunch groups with students. It is always nice to share time with students, and it offers them some special time to have lunch outside the cafeteria with an adult. On a school wide basis, the Good Deeds to Feed (part of PBIS) program continues. The school will be focusing on character education this year, through the Inch and Miles book and other activities and programs. As we have done in the past, Mrs. Ruscito (the School Psychologist) and I will be running social skills groups. Several of these we will do together. Please feel free to call me (647-5100) or email me (MMcEntee@fg.k12.ri.us) at any time. Maureen McEntee, Speech-Language Pathologist / School Social Worker
