Education is that which remains when one has forgotten everything learned in school.
Albert Einstein
Throughout my classes, regardless of the topic, students will be encouraged, if not demanded, to question everything; everything they hear, everything they see, everything they read, and even everything I tell them. They will quickly learn that what is often regarded as truth often is not. To this end, students will frequently find themselves being tested to stand up for the answers they have generated and deem to be correct. For it is often, only after failing to prove something, that the proper solution becomes clear. Careful examination of the relevant facts and figures consistently leads one to the correct answer, the wrong answer, or simply no answer at all. Students need to understand this. Informed students must also realize that there is often a multitude of techniques to apply and just as many paths to take to solve a problem, only to arrive at the same solution. Problem solving skills, as well as a firm understanding of the scientific method, therefore, need to be strengthened in order for the student to be successful. When all is said and done, it is these skills, those of problem solving and a questioning mind, that I hope are the education that remains when much has been forgotten.
