chemistry = the study of the properties of matter and the changes it undergoes Isotope = an element that has varying numbers of neutron, which changes the mass of that element homogeneous mixture = also known as a solution; varying composition of at least 2 substances, but appears to be uniform deuterium = is an isotope of hydrogen, which contains 1 proton and 1 neutron (the most common for of hydrogen has 0 neutrons) Nucleus = (Rutherford- Gold Foil experiment = small, dense, central component of an atom with a positive charge Quantum Mechanics = a theory used to locate the 'probablity' of finding an electron (using the Uncertainty Principle) energy level = a specific energy that may be possessed by electrons in an atom energy sublevel = a specific energy that may be possessed by electrons within an evergy level excited state = elecrton configuration showing that the outer electron absorbing energy ground state = electron configuration showing all electrons in their normal state Hund's rule = 1 electron must occupy an orbital befor e2 electrons can occupy the same orbital within a specific energy level
