Summer Packet Date Information

Did you think I forgot about you?  How many of you checked this right after I gave the information packet out?  Shame - enjoy your summer!  The fun will begin soon enough.

Please remember this is NOT mandatory.  I simply put this and your summer packet together to give you an early indication as to what I hope you've retained.  First thing you should know and expect is that you work off of a simple periodic table.   Look at the first page of your summer packet, notice you are only given symbols (no names to the elements).  Spend some time familiarizing yourself with those that you haven't been exposed to a ton.

How is the page going to work for you?  Again, this is designed to keep you somewhat fresh over the summer.  I plan on starting the year with a lab just so you understand the differences between our labs and Honors labs.  From there, I will begin with naming and organic stuff.  I will make the assumption that atoms, ions, molecules, measurement, and basic chemistry is already understood.  So on those dates from the front of your packet, I will post some general questions that can be answered.

If you choose to do this, here are the rules!  Let's use July 5th as our example.  You log on to my website July 5th at 1:00 p.m.  You open this page, and then the July 5th subpage.  You will then see maybe some background information on a topic and then a couple (varies on topic) of questions.  You have until 10:00 p.m. that same night (July 5th) to email me your answers.  My email address is mjviscar@interact.ccsd.net (this will be on every subpage so you don't have to worry about it).  If you get these questions 100% correct (the entire assignment does not have to be 100% correct - just answers to a particular question) you earn add on points for the indicated type of assignement (homework, quiz, lab, weekly assignment, etc.).  Note:  you can log on earlier than those dates if they are posted, the dates are more like a deadline verses a starting date.

How can you use add on points?  When will you know you've earned the add on points?  Add on points do exactly what it sounds like it does - you can add on 10, 15, 20, 25 points to any assignment (based on category) throughout the entire year that you have accumulated.  Say for example you answered questions correctly on July 5th,19th, and Aug. 16th and they all happen to be points for your weekly assignment category.  July 5th was for 15 points in the weekly assigments category, July 19th was worth 25 points in quizzes, and August 16th was worth 50 points for weekly assignments.  You have accumulated 90 points to use throughout the year; 65 points for weekly assignments and 25 points to go towards quizzes.  During the year you received an 8/15 on a weekly assignment, you can come in after school and use 7 of the 65 points to make the assignment 15/15.  Get it?  Only stipulation is:  these points CAN NOT be used to replace a missing assignement or a zero.  You will be notified by a reply email or by your beginning of the year packet the total points earned for each category.

There will be more opportunities throughout the year to add to your bank, but for now let's just look at summer!
