One hundred years from now it will not matter how much money you made what kind of car you drove what sort of house you lived in, but one hundred years from now the world will be a better place because you made a difference in the life of A Child.

Purpose of Counseling for Students:

Help you by listening to your problems and concerns

Explore your feelings and how you had a good or awful day

Provide a safe place to talk about anything

 Provide trusting relationships

Develop academic, social, and friendship skills

Explore what you think and feel about yourself (self-concept / self-esteem)

Help you be a success at school

What The Counselor Can Offer:

Small Group Counseling:

The George G. Blaisdell's Elementary Counseling Program is designed to enhance academic, personal, social, and career awareness of all students. The program is based on the developmental stages of PreK-2nd with a primary focus directed towards education and prevention. A variety of small group sessions will be offered throughout the year to possibly include: Cool Heads (Anger Management), Stress Busters (ways to reduce stress), Family Changes (Divorce and Separation), Saying Goodbye (Grief and Loss), Confident Kids (Self-Esteem), Friendship Circle (Friendship Skills), and many, many more. Groups meet once a week (during the school day) for 30 minutes for a total of eight sessions. Parent permission is necessary for students to participate. Students attending a small group are responsible for making up missed school work. Look for a permission slip in the school newsletter to have your child participate in a small group.

* Please note that not all groups are offered at one time. Please contact your School Counselor directly to inquire about a special small group that you feel would be beneficial to your son or daughter.

Individual Counseling:

Need a ear or someone to bounce an idea off of? Having trouble with a friend, teacher, or family member? One-on-one counseling is offered to all students during school hours. Sessions are kept confidential (private) and do require parent permission.

3 Things Students Can Do To Meet And Talk With A Counselor:                 * Fill out a note from a basket outside a counselor's door and place the note back in the basket.                                                                                                                        * Talk to a teacher for a referral to talk with a counselor.                                             * Talk with a guardian/parent for a referral to talk with a counselor. Your counselor is here to help you! Stop by and chat. Together we will help make your school fun, safe and a great place to be.

Confidentiality Means:                            whatever you talk about with the School Counselor stays private and is never said to anyone else with 3 limits:

1)    Harm Self or Others: if you plan to hurt yourself or someone else

2)    Child Abuse: if someone is hurting you or someone you know

3)    Court: if a judge wants to talk about our sessions together

If any of these 3 things happen, the School Counselor will have to break confidentiality and tell someone who can help you right away!  So, you can be SAFE.  Please Note: Counselors must follow confidentiality!

Classroom Guidance Lessons:                Classroom Guidance consists of a variety of lessons, activities, and themes presented to your child on a rotational schedule. Topics for Classroom Guidance Lessons includes: Citizenship, Safety Awareness, Friendship Skills, Career Awareness and Exploration, Conflict Resolution, Bullying Awareness, Self-Esteem, Problem-Solving Skills, and much more. Lessons are planned to appropriately address the developmental levels of students. Please talk with your child about what he or she is learning in Classroom Guidance.

Auto-B-Good Character Education Program:

Throughout the school year at George G. Blaisdell Elementary School, the Character

Education Program will encourage students to show the Character Word of the Month.

The Character Words of the Month are listed below.  For example, the Character

Word of the Month for November is Sportsmanship. Those students nominated by

their teacher each month who show great Sportsmanship will receive a prize and

certificate from the School Counselor. Students nominated will also have their name

put on the Character Education bulletin board outside the cafeteria.  A morning

announcement at the school will congratulate students nominated for showing the

Character Word of the Month.  Each month, all students will have an opportunity

to show the Character Word.   At the end of each month, please stop by to see the

bulletin board by the cafeteria and those students selected for this Character Award.

Character Word Of The Month:
September—Courage
October—Honesty
November—Sportsmanship
December—Kindness
January—Respect
February—Fairness
March—Citizenship

Drop a Pebble in the Water

Drop a pebble in the water

Just a splash and it's gone.

But there's half a hundred ripples

Circling on and on and on

Spreading, spreading from the center

Flowing on out to sea

And there is no way of telling

Where the end is going to be.
