Classroom News September 12, 2009
News from Social Studies ... Welcome back! I hope that all of our school families had a peaceful summer break. It is amazing to witness the physical and social growth made by our students over the weeks away from school. The students of sixth grade will be exploring the rich history of the Eastern Hemisphere. They have begun their studies with a practice of map skills and use of geographical tools. Over the course of the year they will examine the ancient cultures of India, Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia/Fertile Crescent, Rome, Arabia, and China. The seventh grade students have opened their studies with a look at the physical regions of North America, first populations to inhabit the continent, and map skills. Their studies will, in the coming months, lead them through such topics as: the arrival of Europeans in the hemisphere, the rivalry between colonial powers, the lifestyles and hardships of colonists, the American Revolution, our framework for a democratic system of government, the growth of industry, western expansion, and political issues that led to the Civil War. Eighth grade students have jumped right into a unit on the social tensions, legislation, and judicial decisions that contributed to the secession of southern states, and ultimately, the Civil War. They are excited by the schedule of topics, which will lead them through World War II and the Cold War Era. Best wishes for the months ahead,
