Writing Workshop

What is Writing Workshop?

 During Writing Workshop, we will:

• Build a community of writers who can work productively and respectfully every day in writing workshop.   
• Study the works of famous authors like Vera B. Williams, Angela Johnson, Jane Yolen and Ezra Jack Keats to see how they create stories out of the details of their own lives.
• Share narratives or retellings of at least two appropriately sequenced events both orally and through sketches and words.
• Learn how to zoom in on one important moment and tell it from beginning to middle to end. 
• Experience the opportunity to engage in individual writing conferences to discuss what we are doing as writers each day. 
• Learn strategies for making revisions to a favorite piece.
• Celebrate our first unit with the publication of a treasured memory!

Writing Workshop is an essential part of the day for your first grader.  Research has shown that a one of the most significant factors impacting a child's later literacy is the opportunity to take the moments of his/her life and spin them into stories.
