Reading Instruction

We use a combination of Guided Reading and Reader's Workshop for our reading instruction in first grade. Word work is also a component of the reading program. Our classrooms libraries include both fiction and non-fiction books at many different levels. It is our goal to foster a love of reading in our students that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

Guided Reading: During guided reading students read leveled texts (books that are "just right" for their reading level) in a small group led by their teacher. Specific reading strategies and comprehension strategies are targeted.

Reader's Workshop: Reader's Workshop instruction begins with a whole group mini-lesson that targets a specific reading strategy or comprehension strategy. The teacher introduces and models the strategy; the students engage in "trying out" the skill or strategy with a text; and then practice the skill or strategy independently during the independent reading section of the workshop.
During the independent or partner reading portion of the workshop the teacher conferences with individual students or small groups of students targeting a specific skill or strategy.
The final portion of the workshop is share time  During this time students gather back together in a large group and are given the opportunity to demonstrate how they used the strategy  or skill during independent reading.



Literacy Work Stations:  While small groups of students are engaged in
Guided Reading, the rest of the class will be working independently in Literacy Work Stations.
