Individual Events

Individual events are performed by students as solo performances. Students are allowed to participate in two events. Speech students may help in the selection of their pieces or even write original material. Finding good material takes a long time. We appreciate your help!
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS CATEGORIES
Acting: memorized presentation of a scene.
After-Dinner Speaking: an original speech directed toward a specific listening group. It should be entertaining, with a theme.
Expository Address: an original informative speech that includes visual aids.
Improvisational Acting: creating and presenting a story using a given situations, and two separate characters. You draw topics at the site, with a 15-minute preparation time.
Interpretative Reading-Poetry: not memorized, this is an oral interpretation of a selection of poetic material chosen by the student.
Interpretative Reading-Prose: not memorized, this is an oral interpretation of prose chosen by the student.
Literary Program: not memorized, this is a combination of poetry and prose on a common theme.
Original Oratory: written by the speaker, this speech must be persuasive or inspirational.
Public Address: a memorized presentation of another’s material.
Radio News Announcing: a coherent four to five minute news program is presented after selecting and organizing news copy during a 30 minute preparation time.
Review: an information speech in which the speaker shares his/her viewpoint of a movie, book, video, etc.
Solo Musical Theatre: one-person performance of a song from a musical. Five minute time limit.
Spontaneous Speaking: prepared at the contest site, this speech is selected from three topics drawn by the student. The topics are usually current events. Three minutes to prepare.
Storytelling: sharing an original or published story. Told, not read. Performer must sit on a stool.
