What is Speech? What is Speech?

COMEDY, TRAGEDY, and MAKING YOUR POINT in front of an AUDIENCE

Participation in speech includes rehearsals and competitions. There are two types of competitions: large group and individual events. There are three levels of participation for each type of competition: district, state and all-state.

Speech competitions begin at the district level where you perform for a single judge and a small classroom audience. The judge gives you a rating (I - IV) and oral comments. Students must receive a I rating at districts to continue at the state level.

At the state level, you perform for a panel of judges and the audience. You receive ratings (I - IV) from all three judges. Students achieving an overall I rating must receive a I from at least two of the three judges. Additionally, a very small percentage of performers are selected as outstanding performers, making them eligible (but not guaranteed) to participate at All-State.
