Unit 1

Goals:  Communicative

             Describing location, asking for and giving directions, ordering

             People to do something, exchanging money, expressing

             Preferences, making a purchase, describing clothing, naming snack

             Foods, ordering a snack, taking an order, at a café

 

             Culture

              Nightlife in Madrid, Highlights of Madrid, El paseo: the evening

              Stroll, shopping in a department store, numbering of floors in a

               Building, a department store directory, a clothing catalog, café and

               Restaurant foods, in Spain, La sopa castellana reader’s theater.

         

               Structure

               Affirmative Tú commands, regular forms, numbers: 100-1,000,000

               Saber, salir, dar, Gustar and Encantar, a summary, Stem-

               Changing verbs, ordinal numbers, TENER idioms, Indirect object

               Pronouns.

 

Unit 2

Goals:   Communicative

              Discussing the classes they are taking, asking and answering

              Questions about family members, talking about possessions,

               Discussing cultural stereotypes, identifying points of contact

               With other cultures, asking and answering questions about past

               Summer vacations, talking about environment, talking about

               Physical geography features and locations, making comparisons.

 

              Culture

               La familia Real, El pajarp de los siete colores, El leon y las pulgas

 

               Structure

               Direct object pronouns, possessive adjectives, the preterite of

                Regular and 3 irregular verbs, adjectives of nationalities,

                Comparatives and superlatives.

 

 

Unit 3

Goals:  Communicative

Describing past activities, predicting and describing the weather, pointing out specific people and things, persuading someone to do something, giving orders, talking about the past describing daily routines in present and past time.

 

Culture

Tío Tigre y Tío Conejo, Los tres consejos, La casa embrujada

 

Structure

Preterite tense: Irregular verbs, demonstratives, affirmative TU commands: regular , negative TU commands: regular and irregular, USTED/USTEDES commands, Imperfect tense.

 

 

Unit 4

Goals:  Communicative

Talking about what you used to do, telling what chores you did, describing habitual actions in the past, describing your childhood, telling what happended some time ago, talking about the past , asking and answering questions about the past, describing past events, describing in the past describing how you used to feel, narrating in the past.

 

Culture

El sombrerón, El gallo de la cresta Inca, La camisa de Margarita Pareja

 

Structure

The Imperfect: SER, VER, IR, uses of the imperfect: habitual actions, time, age, HACER to express ago, Uses of the Imperfect continuing actions, Uses of the preterite: completed actions and beginning or ending actions, Uses of the imperfect: description, Narrating in the past: imperfect and preterite.
