Welcome to AP Calculus
What is Calculus? Calculus is the mathematics of change and motion. The two branches of calculus that we will study are Differential and Integral Calculus (single variable).
What is AP Calculus? AP Calculus is a college level Calculus class. On May 5, 2010, all students must take the AP Calculus AB Exam. A score of 3 or better on the AP Exam should translate to college credit or placement depending on the school and major chosen by the student.
To find out more about AP Calculus, visit www.collegeboard.com What textbook will we use? We will use Calculus of a Single Variable Early Transcendental Functions, Third Edition. Larson, Hostetler, Edwards.
What will we study? In order to do well in Calculus it is crucial to have a complete understanding of the material covered in Precalculus. With this in mind, the first unit we will complete in this class will be a review of Precalculus. After completing this review, we will complete the following chapters in the book:
1- Limits and their Properties 2 - Differentiation 3 - Applications of Differentiation 4 - Integration 5 - Differential Equations 6 - Applications of Integration Review for the AP Exam 7 - Integration Techniques
What do you need to be successful in AP Calculus? EFFORT! If you put in the effort you can pass this class and pass the AP Exam.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Homework is a very important part of any mathematics class. Not only do you practice the skills that we learn in class, but you also receive formative grades for the homework you complete. It's a very important step in passing this class and passing the AP Exam. You wil have homewokr every night.
Once school starts this icon will link to your homework calendar. You can always check here for your assignments.
Where can you go for help? If you are struggling with the material in AP Calculus, the best this to do is stay after school with me for help. Do this IMMEDIATELY. The longer you wait, the more the difficulties will escalate.
You can also check out this website for help.... www.calculus.com
What materials do you need? Notebook (your choice) Pencil or pen (pencil is preferred) TI-83 or higher model graphing calculator
Using a calculator in mathematics can be a powerful tool. We will use it as just that - a tool. The AP Exam consists of four parts. Two parts are completed with a calculator and two parts are completed without. We will spend the majority of the first half of this course preparing for the non-calculator portion of the exam. Therefore, most of the beginning quizzes and tests will be non-calculator. We will focus on the calculator portion of the exam more during the second half of the course. For the practice with the calculator portion, you will need to have a graphing calculator at home. If you do not have a graphing calculator at home, please see me and we will make arrangements.
