Chair Tests and Challenges
|
|
There will be several chair tests throughout each semester. Chair tests will be assigned from current music, scales, exercises, and all state audition materials. You will be judged on your ability to play the correct notes, rhythms, with good tone, and in tune, with the appropriate musicality. I would highly suggest every student have a tuner and metronome to use in practice sessions. Any student may decide to challenge the student sitting in the next chair above them. You must give the person being challenged, as well as the band director, notice of the challenge one class period in advance. You may not challenge anyone without notification. I would highly suggest using email as well as verbal notice of the challenge so that there will be no doubt as to your intentions. The band director will decide the music to be played in the challenge, not the student. There will be no challenges within seven days of a performance. In the event of a tie, the band director will use sight reading to break the tie. The loser of any challenge must wait seven days before they may repeat the challenge. Please remember that chair tests and challenges are not to be taken too seriously. Auditions for chairs are a normal part of any musical ensemble. If they are becoming a problem, I will simply seat you in whatever order I feel is appropriate. Please remember to be use good sportsmanship whether a challenge is won or lost.
