What's Happening in Science? Week of May 21, 2012 The Bald Eagles are back! We have been taking a few minutes in class to check in on the Decorah, Iowa family of Bald Eagles. Three healthy babies, along with Mamma and Daddy Eagle, are giving us the opportunity to see the everyday chores and trials that these wonderful birds face in the wild. If you would like to peek in on this family of eagles at home, you can Google Raptor Resource Project and choose the Ustream site. Enjoy! A letter went home with new information for accessing the science book online. I have also posted the website and access codes for 3rd - 5th grades. This year, students will become experts at using their textbooks. I will challenge them throughout the year to use their book to find the answers to complete outlines, vocabulary activities, and often tests. It is important to me that students know how to locate information rather than memorize it. If that skill is developed, students will always be able to solve problems and complete tasks. Our children are exposed to so much information it becomes impossible to retain all of it. My goal for them is to get really good at finding it! Parents, you can help at home by exposing your student to informational text through books, magazine articles, and newspapers. Ask your child to tell you about what they read or to find a particular passage or topic. You will be helping your child learn a skill that they will use throughout their lifetime. Third Grade News Students drew animals last week and labeled the parts their animal had for getting food, water, shelter, oxygen, and body protection. We also started exploring animal classifications to find out why a bird is a bird, a mammal is a mammal, etc. Our upcoming project for Mrs. Trevino's class is a skit, written by students, to tell about their chosen animal. They will also be making props. In Mrs. Gordon's class, our project is a compare/contrast research paper. All students have chosen an animal to compare to the polar bear. I look forward to seeing their final products! Fourth Grade News Students presented their animal creations this week. It was great fun seeing where their imaginations took them. We had some very cute and some very scary animals. Good job 4th grade! Our next topic is food chains and food webs. We will look at the differences between them as well as what makes them the same. Students will become part of a food chain/web as we model some and they will create both on paper. Fifth Grade News Body books are assembled and students are using them to create their human body complete with body systems. This is always a fun project for students and I am always amazed at their final projects.
