Volleyball Volleyball

HISTORY

The game of volleyball was first called  mintonette and was originated in 1895 by William C. Morgan. The first rules incorporated many of the basic rules of tennis, baseball, and handball. originally the game was played over a tennis net at a height of approximately 6'6" with a basketball. The rules allowed for 3 outs before a team lost the ball and the game was played in 9 innings

PRESENT RULES AND REGULATIONS

Net height for women 7'4 1/8"

Court Size is 59 feet long by 29'6" wide

Center Line divides the court in half

Antennas are part of the side boundary, they line up with the sideline and extend up to the ceiling. The ball must pass entirely between the 2 antennas when crossing the net.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of volleyball is not to let the ball touch the floor on your side of the net, and to send the ball over the net in such a way that the opponent is unable to return it.

All contact with the volleyball must be brief and instantaneous. This means no scooping, lifting, carrying, or pushing of the ball. The same player may not make two consecutive contacts with the ball.

NET PLAY

Players may not touch the net or cross under the centerline while the ball is in play. Players may not reach over the net to contact the volleyball on the other side of the net.

THE GAME

Play begins with a serve from the player in the right back position. The serve may occur anywhere along the endline. The servers foot cannot cross over the endline before contact with the volleyball. The volleyball may not make contact with the antennas, the ceiling, the beams, or the pipes.

After the serve a team is allowed a maximum of 3 contacts with the volleyball before it must cross the net.

SCORING

If the serving team wins the play they score a point and serve again. If the receiving team wins the play they score a point AND win a side out. This means that they rotate one position clockwise and then serve.

Games are complete when one team scores 25 points and isahead by at least 2 points.

The match is won by the team that wins 2 out of a 3 game match, or 3 out of a 5 game match.

Points are scored when the receiving team commits a fault or error.

Some faults are:

-Allowing the ball to touch the floor or not returning the ball over the net   to the opponent.

-More than 3 contacts with the ball on one side of the net

-Hitting the ball out of bounds on the opponents side of the court.

-Double hit ( two consecutive contacts  with the volleyball by the same player.)

-Carry or throw on contact with the volleyball

-Player contact with the net or crossing the centerline while the ball is in play.

-Volleyball does not cross entirely between the 2 antennas when crossing the net.

-Out of rotation on the serve.
