Dear Parents and Students,

Our science class will soon begin exploring the chapter entitled “Reproduction and Development.” In this chapter, students will learn how living things develop and reproduce as part of the cycle of life. By the end of the chapter, students should demonstrate a clear understanding of the chapter’s main ideas and be able to discuss the following topics:

1.    the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems (Section 1)

2.    disorders and diseases that are associated with human reproduction (Section 1)

3.    the processes of fertilization and implantation (Section 2)

4.    the development of the embryo and the fetus (Section 2)

5.    the course of human development (Section 2)

Questions to Ask Along the Way
You can help your child learn about these topics by asking interesting questions as they progress through the chapter. For example, you may wish to ask your child the following questions:

•    Why do twins look so much alike?
•    What things do all mammals have in common?
•    What is a common use of ultrasound technology?
•    What changes take place during adolescence?

Florida Sunshine State Standards
The following standards are addressed in this chapter:

F.1.3.1 AA    understands that living things are composed of major systems that function in reproduction, growth, maintenance, and regulation.
F.1.3.3 CS    knows that in multicellular organisms cells grow and divide to make more cells in order to form and repair various organs and tissues.

The Internet at Home
If you have Internet service at home, you and your child can access information related to the chapter “Reproduction and Development.” The following resources are available for your use.
sciLINKS: At www.scilinks.org you will find links to Web sites that have been selected by the staff at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The staff at NSTA regularly scans the Internet to find sites that are current, engaging, and appropriate for middle school students.
