Parent preview of Grandparents Day-Nov.24 Grandparents Day – Nov.25 Please dress up. *Grandparents Day is November 25th and the Parent Preview performance is the day before. Start times are as follows: Parent Preview begins at 8:45 for lower school and 9:30 for middle school. Grandparents Day begins for lower school at 10:00 with students performing in the MPR. Classroom visits follow from 10:40 – 11:15. Students are free to leave or visit classrooms in the style of an Open House. Dear Parents, This week we have been very focused on rehearsing for Grandparent’s Day. The children have been fantastic paying attention and performing their parts. So much credit goes to Mrs. Aberle for making this experience so fun and rewarding for the kids. We have also been creating something special for each grandparent, or special guest, to take home. This involved writing about the grandparent, or something the grandparent would appreciate, and drawing a picture to go along with it. We are planning to share these pieces and the books the children published earlier in the year. Also this week, I read Town Mouse, Country Mouse again and the children listened for words describing each place. They made lists as I read and then used these words to help them describe which kind of mouse they would want to be. The main skill we focused on this week was capitalization. We studied which kinds of words need a capital letter and then we did a packet of worksheets to practice. This requires the kids to use lower case letters in all the words where a capital is not needed. We edited our writing pieces for capitalization as well. Thank you for helping your child use capitalization and punctuation on their homework. I also gave them 5 extra points on their spelling tests if they used all lower case letters. Most of those who didn’t, had the opportunity to make corrections to earn the points. A couple children did not have time. They can do it on the next test. We did three different community building activities to promote our sense of group togetherness. I taught the children a new game called “Giants, Wizards and Elves”. They loved this game even though it did provide some difficulties in group decision making. We also played “Do You Love Your Neighbor?” an old favorite. In addition, two seventh graders came and played “The Ogre Game” with us. We lost a lot of science time due to rehearsals, but we did get to plant our spider plant cuttings. Their roots had started in water and Liz Cole, our planting specialist, brought us the planting materials. We are planning to grow these to sell at the plant sale benefiting St. Francis. Have a great week end!
