Sentence Problems and Variety

The following topics are covered in mini-lessons throughout the course of the year. They are typically covered using Daily Oral Language exercises which give students the opportunity to practice editing and proofreading skills. These topics will also be taught in the context of the writing process using both student and professional models to help guide our students in the use of these tools in their own writing.

  1. Sentence fragments
  2. Run-ons
  3. Subject-verb agreement
  4. Combining sentences using key words
  5. Combining sentences with compound subjects and predicates
  6. Types of sentences
    1. Simple and compound sentences
    2. Declarative sentences
    3. Interrogative sentences
    4. Exclamatory sentences
  7. Expanding  the use of sentence parts -- specific attention is devoted to the use of:
    1. Participles
    2. Absolutes
    3. Appositives
    4. Adjectives shifted out of order
    5. Using action verbs
    6. Using combinations to create interesting sentence patterns
