Kindergarten Homework

Kindergartners are assigned various homework projects throughout the year, but we do not designate a specific week day for assignments.

Letter homework is assigned as each new consonant or vowel is introduced. Each letter should be practiced with the correct formation and your child should draw or cut out several pictures that begin with the letter sound. You are encouraged to write a story with your child which includes words that begin with the assigned letter. This is an optional activity, but it is another way to help secure important letter knowledge.

Class books will circulate and are also considered homework. Please read the books with your child, then respond to the comment page, together.

Home-School Book Links are assigned as new author studies and curriculum topics are introduced. Again, share the book together, then help your child complete the activity. These activities are varied and are designed for enrichment.

The Everyday Math Program provides  many opportunities for learning at home. Periodically, your child will be assigned one or more Math-Home links. Each Math-Home link reinforces the concepts presented in class and are an important part of this program. They will also receive four math books for at home activities.

Our poetry program is an important part of each week and is essential for phonemic awareness. A weekly poem will be sent home for your child to keep in a folder or binder. Another copy of this poem is illustrated and kept in school in their individual poem anthologies. Reading the poems at home is part of their weekly homework.

Children should have a designated homework space. This space should be organized, quiet, and conducive to working. Providing this space helps to establish routines and is an important precedent to set.

Homework should be completed and returned in a timely fashion, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
