First Essay assignment. 

This assignment is to help you locate and find the parts of an essay.

Step 1: Download and Save the example Essay below. 

Step 2: Read the Essay and do the following.

  1. Highlight the Thesis Statement in BLUE.
  2. Highlight the textbook example in YELLOW.
  3. Highlight the personal experience example in GREEN.
  4. Highlight the pop-culture or cultural example in PINK.
  5. Highlight the conclusion in RED.

Step 3: Find the essay score.

  1. Turn-on the Track-Changes feature of MSword. Tools->Track Changes (Ctrl+Shift+E)
  2. Set-up your Readablity Statistics Box (See Readablity Statistics Box below)
  3. Run the Spelling and Grammar Check feature of MSword. (Penality -1 for each mistake.)
  4. Using the Essay Criteria file below. Find the essay score for this essay.
  5. Save your work. The file name should look like this:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Essay#1-20071111Hong Gil-dong08.doc  (Please use your ID number, name, and class number.)
  6. Attach two documents (MSword and Excel documents) to an e-mail and send it to lisahere@cau.ac.kr
