I am Mrs. Kerley and I work with fourth graders in the Title 1 reading program.  The goal of the program is to increase your child's reading level in accordance with his or her ability.  I meet with small groups students for minutes each day.  The small group setting allows for more individualized instruction in the areas that need improvement.  We focus on utilizing reading strategies to improve comprehension and strengthening phonics skills. 

Several factors are considered when selecting students for the program.  We look at communication arts scores from the MAP test, reading grades and teacher recommendations.  Students who attend Title 1 do not miss out on direct instruction in their classroom.  They are pulled out during the communication arts block but it is scheduled at a time when students would be working independently.     

You are a crucial part of your child's education.  One of the best things you can do to help your child improve his or her reading is setting aside time to read each day.  Make it fun by reading to your child or taking turns reading to each other.  Visit a library and check out books that you would enjoy reading together.
