Happy Thanksgiving! Phonemic Awareness: Our class used linking cubes to count words this week. A teacher read a short part of a nursery rhyme and we built a tower to figure out how many words were in the phrase. We also practiced this again the next day using sentence about ourselves (I am ___ years old). We could easily show you this at home using pennies, beans or anything small at home. For example sentence “Today is Friday” has 3 words. Try it at home! We also continue blending vowels and consonants to make words in a fun game called the Letter Show! Word Study: New sight words this week are “one” & “have”. The initial sound of consonant /d/ was introduced this week with a yummy snack. Ask us what it was! We’ve finished initial handwriting for the time being, as all 26 letters of the alphabet have been introduced. All letters will continue to be practiced throughout the scho yrea Reading Workshop: Readers in the classroom continue to choose their own books for reading workshop to read independently. On Thursday we read the story The Little House. As we read we made predictions and talked about print concepts of the cover of the book and where the story begins. Math: Numbers 0-5 continue to be practiced, as well as ordinal numbers such as first, second, third, fourth and fifth. Writing Workshop: Writing partnerships have been established this week. Our writing partners are there for us in many ways. They can help us find a sight word to write, they can help us think of writing ideas and they are there to hear our stories when we are done. Theme: In social studies this week we learned about homes. Different types of homes were talked about, what you can find in the different rooms of a home and what other places could be considered homes. After reading A House is a House For Me, we made a class book. For example someone said “A tree is a house for a bird”.
