PHONEMIC AWARENESS
Onset and Rime
Words can be split into two parts - the onset and the rime. The onset is the initial consonant sound (b- in bag, sw- in swim), and the rime is the vowel and the rest of the syllable that follows (-ag in bag, -im in swim).
WORD STUDY
Alphabet Review:
Bb
We read Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming. We did a reader’s theater based on the book! A reader’s theater is a style of theatre in which the students do not memorize their lines. Rather, they either go through the performance holding scripts and reading off their lines,. In Reader's theatre, students use vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling such as sets and costumes. These types of activities are wonderful for reading fluency for our young readers.

READING
Text to text connections are when something from one story reminds you of something from another story. We discussed how to make these types of connections and read the story Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. We will use this story to make text to text connections next week.
Word Attack Skill: Get Your Lips Ready to Say the Beginning Part of the Word
Word attack skills help us figure out tricky words in our reading. We already know that we use picture clues to figure out tricky words, but sometime that is not enough alone. We need to confirm with the beginning sounds of the word to make sure it is the correct word. We practiced this in a large group setting and have been encouraged to use this strategy during independent reading time.

WRITING
We worked hard on revealing the ‘internal’ parts of our stories. Often when children write they talk about the things that happened in their lives. Our writers are now encouraged to write about their feelings as well. The internal part of a story is that part that the reader cannot see. For example, an author this week wrote “I watched the Superbowl with my dad. It made me feel happy. “ The latter sentence being the internal part of the story.
