Reading Strategies
Reading Strategies: Strategy 1: Predict/Infer - Think about the title, illustrations, and what you have read so far.
- Tell what you think will happen next or what you will learn.
- Try to figure out things the author does not say directly.
Strategy 2 : Monitor/Clarify - Ask yourself if what you are reading makes sense or if you are learning what you need to learn.
- If you don't understand something, reread, look at the illustrations, or read ahead.
Strategy 3 : Question - Ask questions about important ideas in the story that can be answered as you read or after you finish reading.
Strategy 4: Evaluate - Think about how you feel about what you have read.
- Think about what was entertaining, informative, or useful about the selection.
- Ask yourself: Did I understand the selection and did I enjoy reading it?
Strategy 5: Summarize - Identify the characters and setting.
- Think about the problem in the story and how the characters solve it.
- Tell in your own words the important parts of the story to include the beginning, middle, and end.
