Reading Strategies

Reading Strategies:

Strategy 1: Predict/Infer

  • Think about the title, illustrations, and what you have read so far.
  • Tell what you think will happen next or what you will learn.
  • Try to figure out things the author does not say directly.

Strategy 2 :  Monitor/Clarify

  • Ask yourself if what you are reading makes sense or if you are learning what you need to learn.
  • If you don't understand something, reread, look at the illustrations, or read ahead.

Strategy 3 : Question

  • Ask questions about important ideas in the story that can be answered as you read or after you finish reading.

Strategy 4:  Evaluate

  • Think about how you feel about what you have read.
  • Think about what was entertaining, informative, or useful about the selection.
  • Ask yourself: Did I understand the selection and did I enjoy reading it?

Strategy 5:  Summarize

  • Identify the characters and setting.
  • Think about the problem in the story and how the characters solve it.
  • Tell in your own words the important parts of the story to include the beginning, middle, and end.
