Reading:

Theme 1: Silly Stories

For the next few weeks, we will be enjoying the theme Silly Stories.  We will be doing plenty of giggling as we read stories about a dragon that shops, a cool pig from Alaska, and farm animals that play house.

We will practice comprehension skills such as story structure; to include characters, setting, and plot. We will identify the difference between Fantasy and Realism and using what we read to predict outcomes.  Students will have the opportunity to complete activities that incorporate each of the above skills.

While reading our stories we will incorporate reading strategies such as  summarizing,  monitor and clarify, and predict / infer.  These strategies are valuable tools that we use to help us comprehend our stories and monitor our reading. ( A more detailed explanation of each of these strategies is explained on the subpage titled: Reading Strategies.)

Our language studies will include identifying sentences; naming parts of sentences; and action parts of sentences. We will complete study skill lessons on reading a chart; using a diagram; and locating information at the library.

We will use the skills learned in each story to complete various writing activities.  The Writer's Workshop for this theme focuses on the traits of ideas and organization.  The children will write a story.  A story tells about something that is made-up.  It has a main character, a beginning, a middle, and an end.  All components of the Writer's Workshop will be utilized.

Math:

Unit 1 : Numbers and Routines

This unit reacquaints children will the daily routines of Everyday Mathematics. Children also review and extend mathematical concepts that were developed in First Grade.

In Unit 1, children will :

  • Count in several different intervals-forward by 2's from 300, forward by 10s from 64, backward by 10's from 116, and so on.
  • Practice addition facts, such as 7 + 5 = ?
  • Review whole numbers by answering questions such as, "What number is ten more than 89?"
  • Identify place value
  • Use a number grid to reinforce place-value skills and observe number patterns.
  • Review equivalent number names , such as 10=5+5 , 10=7+3, etc.
  • Play "Addition Top-It " to strengthen number skills.
  • Practice telling time and using a calendar.

 Science:

Our first chapter in Science is Comparing matter.  We will learn that objects can be described by properties such as size, shape, and color.  We will determine that matter can be classified as solid, liquid, or  gas.  By completing experiments we will discover that taking away or adding heat can cause matter from change states.  Finally we will recognize that objects are composed of small parts that may be seen with a magnifier.
