Theatre Arts I Syllabus

Theatre Arts 1

Recommended Grades 9-12

Required Prerequisite: None

Theatre Arts is an overview of theatre arts, basic acting techniques, and introduction to stagecraft. It requires memorization, team work, and participation.

 

Quarter one and two:

Audition by Michael Shurtleff

The 12 guideposts

·        Relationships: How to create them onstage

·        Conflict: What are you fighting for?

·        The moment before: How to start a scene

·        Humor: Why jokes don’t work

·        Opposites: Finding the hidden tension in your scene

·        Discoveries: Making thinks happened for the first time

·        Communication and competition: Reaching the other actor

·        Importance: Locating the dramatic core

·        Find the events: What is really happening in the play?

·        Place: create it on a bare stage

·        Game playing and role playing: Play them for reality

·        Mystery and secret: Adding wonderment to the scene

 

Writing scenes, acting, memorizing, blocking

 

Quarter three:

  • Set design
    • Design a set and create a to-scale model of it

 

Quarter Four:

·       Directing Scenes: Scenes directed by students

  • Film acting: Acting for the camera

·        Audience Behavior

·        Vocabulary and concepts written tests

·        Student written plays

·        Performances
