Rent/Mortgage

http://www.niagaramls.com

In this section, you will be deciding whether you will own your own house or if you will rent. Discuss with your teacher the difference between renting and owning your own dwelling. What do you think would be better? Why?

On the first line in your budget sheet, you will see “Mortgage/Rent”. Cross out the one that you will not be participating. For Example “Mortgage/Rent” which means you will be purchasing a home. Are there other costs involved in purchasing a home? What are they?

Your choices are:

Mortgage a dwelling

Large                              $1,500.00

Medium                         $1,000.00

Small                               $800.00

Rent a dwelling

Large                             $1,000.00

Medium                            $800.00

Small                                $550.00

Utilities

In order to simplify, utilities for both types of housing are:

Large                                $800.00

Medium                            $600.00

Small                                $450.00

Car Ownership

Car

You will choose from http://www.westherr.com/ your vehicle. Choose whether you want a new vehicle or a pre-owned vehicle. Discuss with your teacher advantages and disadvantages of both. Spend time in this site, but

DO NOT PUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION IN A FORM

Which car did you choose? Write down the vehicle and year of your chosen car.

Figure out what the down payment would be, and then what would your monthly car payments total? Discuss how you would fit it a down payment (it’s called savings) – you cannot borrow money from your parents or relatives. How many hours working a minimum wage job (this is BEFORE you begin your career) do you have to work to save up enough for this down payment?

Use West Herr Ford to give you gas price per month for your chosen vehicle.

Cable Television Costs

To simplify this project, please use the following costs:

Basic Television Cable               $10.95, for Channels 2-19

Internet Costs

Basic Internet

   (slower connection)                  $29.99

   (faster connection)                    $39.99

http://www.finaid.org/calculators/loanpayments.phtml

Using this table, for simplicity reasons, you will be attending a NYS school. What is your MONTHLY payment, NOT your total loan payment.

2 year college:

$18,500 per year, so at the end of your two year degree, $37,000.

4 year college:

$25,500 per year, so at the end of your four year degree, $102,000.

6 years of college:  (teaching, law or other program that you need a Master’s degree)

$25,500 per year, so at the end of your six year degree, $153,000

8 years of college (doctor, dentist, etc.)

$25,500 per year, so at the end of your eight year degree, $204,000

Using the above link please put in 3% interest rate, and minimum of 10 years for loan term. When you click on “Calculate” write down Monthly Loan Payment on your budget sheet.

Notice the difference between Loan Balance and Cumulative Payments. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking out a loan?
