GLOWING BACTERIA!!!

DR. LEN RUTOLO, FROM WILKES UNIVERSITY'S SCIENCE IN MOTION PROGRAM, VISITED RIVERSIDE TO PERFORM A BACTERIAL TRANSFORMATION LABORATORY WITH AP BIOLOGY AND ADVANCED BIOLOGY STUDENTS.

THEY TRANSFORMED THE BACTERIA ESCHERICHIA COLI WITH A GENE THAT CODES FOR GREEN FLORESCENT PROTEIN (GFP).  THIS GENE IS FROM A BIOLUMINESCENT JELLYFISH.  FOLLOWING THE TRANSFORMATION PROCEDURE, THE BACTERIA EXPRESS THEIR NEWLY ACQUIRED JELLYFISH GENE AND PRODUCE THE FLORESCENT PROTEIN, WHICH CAUSES THEM TO GLOW UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT.
