Learning Right from Wrong

                                                      Leer

Cuando la lectura forma parte de la vida familiar, usted le comunica al nino que los libros son importantes, agradables y llenos de cosas que aprender.

                                                      Read

When reading books is a regular part of family life, you send your child a message that books are important, enjoyable and full of new things to learn.

                                            Take a Book Walk!

Children love book walks. Ask your child to pick out a book that he or she would like to read. Look at the cover of the book. Talk about the pictures and ask your child to tell you about what he or she sees. Ask your child to make a prediction about the story.

Point to the title on the cover. Have your child read the title and discuss the meaning of the words. Ask your child to add to the previous predication after talking about the title. Read the authors name with your child and talk about authors in general. This may include why an author may write or what the author may be try to share with the reader.

Ask your child to read the illustrators name. Discuss what an illustrator does before looking at the pictures within the book. Carefully go through the pages of the book and talk about what "may" be taking place in the pictures. Ask your child questions like, "what do you think is happening now?"  "what clues in the text tell us this?" and "can you tell me more?"

Look at the back of the book and talk about the book's summary (if included) before reading with your child.  During the reading process, keep the dialog moving.  You will learn a great deal about your child's thoughts and his or her imagination while exploring the processes of reading both for comprehension and enjoyment.
