Class "Blog"

Updated May 2, 2011

What's happening:

In Language Arts, we are reading a theme called "Person to Person" all about the interactions and communication between people.  We are working on the reading skills of problem solving and decision making, noting details, comparing and contrasting, and making inferences.  We continue to practice all of our reading strategies while interacting with a variety of literature.  In addition to the reading skills and strategies, we are learning new grammar, writing, spelling, and vocabulary skills.

We are very excited that we received letters from our Spanish pen pals!!!  It is so neat to communicate with new friends far-away!

We are active in Literature Circles.  Students are enjoying participating in book clubs while reading the different novels that they have chosen.  Our next round of groups are reading: A Boy at War, Tuck Everlasting, Goosebumps: Creep from the Deep, Goosebumps: Night of the Living Dummy, and The Million Dollar Shot.

In addition, we are reading aloud Holes by Louis Sachar.  We were lucky to have enough class copies and copies borrowed from the public library and other teachers so that each student has a novel in his or her hand during read aloud.  The students are enjoying using post-it notes in their books while reading to respond to, ask questions, make predictions, and make connections with the literature.

In Math, we are studying Unit 6- Using Data and Fractions.  We are reviewing concepts such as mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range.  We are also displaying data in different ways such as line plots and bar graphs.  We are reviewing adding and subtracting fractions.

In Social Studies, we are learning about the Revolutionary War.  The kids are enjoying learning about Revolutionary heroes and important battles.

In fifth grade we have been learning more about the world around us and our role in it.  We are practicing greater responsibility than ever before.  We have taken technology to the next level with our own class smartboard and projector.  The students and Mrs. Keeler are having fun learning new ways to incorporate technology into the school day!

I am having a baby and my last day will be May 6th.  I will really miss this wonderful class!!  But, I have no doubt that the students will be successful with the new teacher.  Together, we will do our best to make sure the kids have a FANTASTIC end of fifth grade!!

May Birthdays:

Elian- May 1

Dana- May 9

The students had a very interesting field trip to the Lackawanna County Courthouse in the last week of April.  They were enlightened by all of the law enforcement and justice that they witnessed.  They also learned about the three branches of government.

The students will be going on another field trip on May 9th to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid  and go bowling.  Then, can you believe, that the kids will be going on a special DARE field trip in June!!  Wow! This year's fifth grade class really lucked out!

DARE Graduation is scheduled for June 2nd.  The DARE field trip is scheduled for June 9th.

We were happy to host Congressman Lou Barletta and Congressman John Kline, both members of the Congressional Committee on Education, at our school on Monday, March 21st.  Tony got to ask a question to both of the congressmen on stage and a few students got to shake hands with the congressmen.  We were proud to show them what a great school we have!  (Pictures to come.)

March 2, 2011- READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY!

Thank you to the students from Ms. Gerlach's classes who made us Dr. Seuss hats and came to read Dr. Seuss stories to us!  We really love the cool hats!

Also, thanks to the Riverside Drama Club who read to us.  We look forward to "Beauty and the Beast".  Break a leg!

Congratulations to Mrs. Keeler's former student, Riley Gaughan, a 6th grader, who earned a perfect score on his 5th grade writing PSSAs last year!

Thank you for bringing in items for a Viking alum who is serving in our armed forces in Afghanistan.

Congratulations to the students who completed the Scholastic books challenge! They made the pledge to read 10 books in 2 months.  Scholastic donated books to its charity partners on behalf of these students.

We are so proud of our Riverside Vikings football team!  It was so fun cheering you on this season.  Thanks for stopping by East to visit us before the State Championship.  We all enjoyed meeting you and wishing you well.

CONGRATULATIONS Chase and Tony on being elected Student Council Representatives for our class! Students enjoyed giving and watching student council speeches and watching powerpoint presentations created by candidates.  The democratic process was fun!
