HAPPY HEARTS PRESCHOOL PARENT GUIDEBOOK Welcome and thank you for choosing Happy Hearts Preschool-The school with a heart and vision for future generations! We are delighted to help you meet the educational needs of your child. DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP: For safety reasons, we ask that you park your car and walk your child into the building using the front glass door when bringing your child to school and that you park your car and come into the building to pick your child up. Thank you for your cooperation. Your promptness will help us accommodate our busy schedule and allow us to make the most of our educational time in class. CAUTION: GRASP FRONT GLASS DOOR FIRMLY IN STRONG WIND. ALL STUDENTS WILL REPORT TO ROOM A AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SCHOOL DAY. The front door will remain locked until 8:20 AM. NO VERBAL MESSAGES: Happy Hearts Preschool 776-7070 To safeguard your child, we ask you to notify us in writing delivered to us by an adult or with a phone call when a major change takes place on your designated driver form. Verbal messages will not be accepted from your child. It is a very important safety measure that we always know who the designated pick up person is for your child. Please complete the designated driver authorization form for student pick up during the enrollment process. ABSENCES: We understand that absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies. We ask that you help your child have regular attendance so that they will not miss out on the many fun activities and educational learning experiences that we have planned for them. However, if your child has been sick with a fever, cough, congestion or vomited during the last 24 hours, we ask that you keep your child home until they are no longer experiencing these symptoms. Should your child complain about illness at school, we will call you to pick them up if they have a temperature. MEDICATION: Should your child need medication prescribed by a doctor during the school day, we require written instructions including the following: child’s first and last name, name of medication, dosing instructions, parental signature with the date and the original container. We do have a refrigerator if needed for doctor prescribed medication.
Eating a healthy breakfast at home will help your child do well at school! Please do not send gum, drinks, breakfast or sweets to school with your child upon arrival at school.
SNACKS:
Each class will have a snack time with students chosen to be host and hostess. It is very important that you list all allergies your child has on both the enrollment form and the authorization for emergency medical care form. We take all allergies into consideration before planning snacks for your child. BIRTHDAYS: Birthdays are very important and we will be happy to celebrate with your child. On this day, you will be able to provide the special birthday snack that your child would like to share with friends. We will have a list of allergies available for you so that you know what foods to exclude. These will also be listed on the website (not by child’s name). Summer birthdays will be celebrated during the first month of school or during the last month of school, which ever you choose. Please let us know in advance what day your child would like to celebrate so we can put it into our daily lesson plan. PARENT/GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS: We encourage parental involvement. Please consider volunteering to answer the phone and take messages or to help in the classrooms. Volunteer shifts are flexible and can be for an hour or for a block of 3 hours—whatever fits your schedule! DRESS: Children should wear comfortable play clothes and shoes. Please send a set of extra clothing for your young child to be used in case of a wetting accident. Label the bag of clothing with their first and last name and we will keep it on hand just in case it is ever needed. We do not anticipate any wetting accidents and will take children to the restroom at scheduled times. A wetting accident is no cause for alarm. It is just part of the learning process. Please do encourage your child to tell us any and every time he/she needs to go to the restroom and we will be glad to take them. Please let them know, as we will, that we want them to be able to go to the restroom whenever they need to. All children age 3 must be toilet trained-no diapers. DISCIPLINE: Acceptable behavior is encouraged by giving positive verbal rewards. This reinforces a child’s good feeling about his/her behavior and serves as an example to the other children to act in such a way as to receive this praise. Asking a child to stop and think about their unpleasant behavior enables a child to work at self-control. If behavior problems persist after the teacher has used different methods (praising acceptable behavior, removal from the situation, one-on-one conversation with the child, time out) to deal with them, then the parent will be called. This will be followed by a conference with parents to determine further action. Corporal punishment and humiliation are not acceptable methods of dealing with a young child’s behavior at Happy Hearts Preschool. ADMISSIONS POLICY: Happy Hearts Preschool admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin and handicap to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Happy Hearts Preschool does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin or handicap in administration of our educational and admissions policies or other school administered programs. HEALTHY HEARTS: We include a weekly soccer program designed for preschool children to learn the basics of soccer and physical fitness. Students will participate in fun activities that promote a healthy body and mind and the development of fine and gross motor skills. CURRICULUM: Our curriculum covers phonics; reading; writing; math; art; music; science; social studies; character; nature and physical education. It is age appropriate and has proven successful. It is also a lot of fun! Our specialty is teaching children how to read when they are ready. SUPPLY LIST: To be posted if needed One backpack is needed for each child labeled with first and last name. All donations of anything that we can use at school are greatly appreciated. STORM WATCHES/WARNINGS/EMERGENCY PROCEDURE: Please feel free to pick your child up early any time you are aware of a dangerous situation that may affect the preschool. Tornado and fire escape plans will be posted in each classroom. In case of a tornado, we will have all children take cover at the local fire station across the street. In case of fire evacuation, we will walk all children (North) into Pizza Hut. In case of severe medical emergency, we will call 911 and the parent. We will call the emergency contact person if the parent cannot be contacted. CALENDAR: We will follow the Rose Hill school district calendar for the following vacation days out of school: Labor Day-Sept., Thanksgiving-Nov., winter break-Dec./Jan., President’s Day-Feb., spring break-March, Memorial Day-May, July-4th.
