Getting to Know Mrs. Gabriel I received my B.A. in Music Education from Charleston Southern University in 1997. While living in Charleston, SC, I taught music and directed choruses at all academic levels. I have been married for nine years to Chris Gabriel, an artist who specializes in wildlife sculpture. We have been in the Charlotte area for about 5 years. In my spare time, I enjoy making and selling jewelry, being an active member of my church, and sipping lattes while reading in any Barnes and Noble cafe! I also have a deep passion for animals, and promoting animal welfare. I have a beloved, very spoiled dog named Cooper, and sweet, affectionate cats. My Philosophy and Standards on Music Education My philosophy on music education is based on my faith. There are many references in the Bible where music is used to worship and deepen one's connection to God. I believe that music is a powerful means through which we can connect to God and deepen our faith. As a Catholic music educator, I believe my primary responsibility is to foster a love of musical learning in my students, not only as part of their education, but for their spiritual development as well. The music standards practiced in my classroom are derived from the National Standards for Elementary Music Education. There are specific standards for each grade level that encompass various aspects of musical learning. Some examples of these standards include: rhythmic dictation, melodic dictation, and music history.
