The week of February 13th-17th

What will we do this week?

This week we will read Helen Keller and the Big Storm. We will review and work with fact and opinion throughout the week. This week's spelling theme is the /u/ sound, spelled with ew, ue, ui, and oo. Our test will be on Friday. In grammar we will move into adverbs that answer "how?". We will continue to learn new cursive letters.

In Math we will continue Chapter 7 on money. We will test on Wednesday and then move right into Chapter 8 on practicing using money. We will also continue to work with 3 digit addition and the concept of regrouping(carrying).

On Tuesday we will celebrate Valentine's Day with a classroom party. Thank you to those of you that have offered to contribute. If you'd still like to contribute, we already have brownies, cookies, and juice boxes coming. If you're sending in Valentines, please have them in the order listed on the pink sheet. The bags are hanging in that order, so it will make distribution run more smoothly. Thanks!

News

Parents: Our class photos were not shipped with the rest of the school's photos. We contacted the Photography company, and they will be sent ASAP.

Friday, February 17, 2012, will now be a weather make-up day, and school will be open for staff and students.

Valentine's lists will be coming home later this week. There is an informational page on my web site about this as well. There are 17 students in the class. Students may bring Valentines up until Tuesday.

The PTO will kick off its spring fundraiser on February 3rd. The sale will continue through February 21st.

As the weather becomes colder and unpredictable, please make sure your child is wearing a warm jacket and bringing a hat and gloves for recess. We do go outside most days weather permitting.

I have added a link to the login screen for parents to order from our monthly Scholastic book order. I encourage you to order online to help us get free books for our classroom library, but you may also still order by check. We will always place our monthly order on the 15th of the month. Thanks!

Everyday Reminders

Make sure the "Keep at Home" side of your folder is emptied at home every night. The "Return to School" side will contain your child's homework. The homework and flash card envelopes should all be in the "Return to School" side every night and brought back to school the following day.

In second-grade, students will be graded on addition the first marking period, subtraction the second, and a mix of both addition and subtraction the third and fourth marking period. So please be sure to practice your flashcards for a few minutes each night until they're all memorized.

I will be sending spelling words home with the students on Monday in the front pocket of their homework folders. We will have spelling homework most nights, and our spelling tests will always be on Fridays. I would appreciate it if the spellings lists could be sent back to school every day in the folder in case we need them for a school activity. Thanks!

If your child is absent, please send in an excuse note the next day for the office to prevent an illegal absence.

Remember spelling, applied spelling, comprehension, and vocabulary will now all be grades done with your reading teacher. (Grammar and writing will always be done with me.)

We now have our full set of addition flashcards. As we finish a 4 page timed test packet, they will be sent home. Our goal is to get 30 correct on these tests. We will continue them throughout the year, and all timed tests in the first quarter will be with addition. The last 3 of the marking period will be recorded towards their math fact section on the report card.
