Thank you for visiting our class website. I hope that it will provide you and your student tools for success in Reading this year. Below are some questions that are frequently asked of me and their answers. Also, any additional parent letters are downloaded at the bottom of this page. If you have any additional questions or something specific about your student, please e-mail me at lchilders@interact.ccsd.net. Thanks! How can I stay informed? - Check your student’s planner every night.
- Confirm your student has completed his or her homework.
- Check Parentlink regularly to check grade and to determine if any assignments are missing.
- Check teacher websites that are available: Go to http://saville.ccsd.net, click on “Staff,” find the teacher’s name, and click on the computer monitor to the right of their name.
- Communicate with teachers via e-mail or notes written in planner (if no e-mail).
- Schedule conferences with the teacher if the concern is with that one class or through the Counselor’s office if the concern is with all classes.
What if my student needs extra help with assignments or projects? I am available after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in addition to one day before school each week. Your student can check my availability and schedule a time to come in by checking with me 24 hours in advance. Students are also welcome to e-mail me with any questions they may have. I check for messages while at work and can normally return them within 24 hours unless I am off campus. Are there resources on the website my student can use at home to help him or her become a better reader? Yes! You can find documents and links for Reading Strategies in the "Classroom" section and additional tools in the "Links" section. Where can I find important dates? From the main page of this website, click on the "Class Calendar". You will find homework assignments, due dates, testing dates, no school days, etc.. What is my student's homework? Every night, students will be expected to read a minimum of 30 minutes. Students will be required to read books on their reading level and complete 2 projects per quarter. The project directions and required sheets can be found on this website in the "Reading" section. Projects will be graded in the category of "Book Projects" and are worth 20% of the quarterly grade. How does my student make up absent work? On your students' first day back from an absence, he or she needs to check the "Were You Absent?" bulletin board in the classroom and: (1) Copy the information from the calendar for the days absent directly onto their planner, (2) Check the folder with their period number on it and pull out any packets with their name on it, (3) Take the packet home, complete all the assignments listed, and return within three school days. For each day your student is absent (above one day), he or she may extend the due date by one day. If your student needs a textbook in order to complete the assignment, I will temporarily check out a textbook in their name. This needs to be returned as soon as possible so it will be available to other absent students. What's the Book Project I've heard about? This is the same as the homework listed above. Can I print out directions for the Book Project and other forms? Yes! Click on "Reading" and then the appropriate subpage. Please note that not all forms handed out to students are available on my website. What is my student's current grade? Visit Parentlink from our school's website (schools.saville.ccsd.net). Grades in Reading are updated online regularly. Students may also check with me before school for their most current grade. What is my student's grade based on? Click on "Classroom Information" and then "Course Expectations." What materials does my student need? Every day, students should bring a book, their planner, a 3 ring binder, paper, pencils, red pen, and highlighters. Students will need 4 three-prong folders that they can keep at home until the Book Projects are due and a 100 sheet composition book (not a spiral notebook) that will be kept in the classroom.
