Principals Perspective: Carlene Iverson states we are knee deep in testing at LCS. We are going through several tests with the children. NWEA 3 sessions, 1 session FPBA, and Kneecaps 6 sessions for grades 3-4, 8 sessions for grade 5. Be patient with children as the testing continues, not part of what we do everyday, but needs to be done. Professional Development day went well , discussing teaching and learning, and work on curriculum in the afternoon. Incredible knowledge about teaching kids to read. 5 fire drills have been completed, evacuation drill, had a problem with radios working, but worked with Det. McAllister and Officer Estes to relay messages with their radios. Brought to Carlene's attention, a middle school outside of Augusta that had a student's picture in the paper with the name of the student and their school. Letter arrived to the school with the students name, letter was given to the child only to find out that it was a pornographic proposition. We have to be careful with everything we do with kids. Is against the law to intercept mail, so there will be more discussions in the upcoming weeks on how to deal with a situation like this. Reminder that if children are not supposed to be photographed and published, it's on the emergency contact form
Monica's Moment: Apologizes for being late, 30+ volunteers trained today. Jr. Volunteer mtg with 5th grade today at 8:30, 1PM-2PM PWS students, Adults/Young adults tonight. Insurgents of LHS students for Big Brother/Big Sister need to volunteer training so they know what to do in the event of a fire drill, or evacuation, etc when they are in the building. Thanks to the support of many for our immunization day, second one coming up on October 16th in the morning 8:30-12:30 this is a school day. Feedback from Jr. Volunteers from Ice cream social thought it was a lot of fun. Need to train them with in the capacity that you feel is what you need to do. Monica is responsible for recruiting. Will speak with Officer Bernard on Thursday regarding facebook/internet. Will set a date for information meeting to parents. Serve New England delivered last weekend, looking for volunteers for October 24th, need volunteers for pick up and/or to sort at MTM. Contact Monica if you are interested in helping. Turkey Package for Thanksgiving is $30 for Turkey and all the fixins.
Treasurer's Report: Candace Barrett Will have a learning curve with the report. It will run a month behind. Spending for the summer $6946.91, Deposits $1500.56. Motion was made to moved the Frank Karkos Memorial Campership to School vs. PTO tracking...PASSED. Budgeted for 2008/2009 for $14709.99 actually spent $8552.80. Expenses for 2008/2009 Budgeted for $15147.31, Spent $34512.75, Income for 2008/2009 40874.15. Reviewed upcoming expenses for events, family events, as well as operating expenses. Added Box Top under operating expenses, motion to accept...PASSED. Added to family events Trunk-or-Treating $50, changed TV turn-off to $750, staff appreciation to $1000 (all previously approved). Reviewed Field Trip requests and expenses, 5th grade will be asked to donate $20 for Boston Trip, plus the cost of T-shirts at $12-$14 per student for an estimate of $1440-$1680 returned to the PTO. All other field trips will request $1 per child. Will add tracking sheet for donations this year, there have been times when parent's have raised questions about contributing money, but we did not have a system to prove it. This will ensure all money is accounted for. Special Interest Requests add Nurse request from last month for $100 for hand sanitizer in each classroom. There is a difference in Music Request vs. what was approved vs. what was spent. Motion to Accept...PASSED
Old Business
Ice Cream Social- Pam Shane, 300 people in attendance, 10 gallons of ice cream. 6 Jr. Volunteers, 4 adult volunteers. Need to discuss how to block off hallways. Children unattended, and children running around with parents present. Spoke about last year making a SIGN stating “SCHOOL RULES APPLY.” “All children must be accompanied by an adult” should be added to the bottom of the flyers. Chair committee members moving forward will need adults to monitor hallways

LISBON COMMUNITY SCHOOL PTO MEETING MINUTES
AUGUST 31, 2009
ATTENDEES: Carlene Iverson, Annette Wilson, Kate Race, Carol Leclair, Karen Morse, Kim Simpson, Pam Shane, Michelle King, Bryce Kulow, Amy Austin, Lisa Curtis, Jessica Maloy, Jen Libby, Libby Hopping, Keall Fry, Bobbi Hill, Candace Barrett, Angela Shambarger, Jackie Katz, Monica Millhime, Chrissie Maney, Kim Martin
1. WELCOME: Meeting Called to order at 6:06 PM by PTO President Bobbi Hill. Introductions were made, as well as a brief description of what the PTO does for the school. I.e. Free events for families, fundraising for items needed for the school such as playground equipment.
2. Minutes of June Meeting: Minutes were not posted from the June meeting, but will be shortly. Look for them on the PTO website at www.lcspto.com
3. Principal's Perspective: Carlene Iverson, LCS Principal reports the first 3 days have been great. There has been a change this year for the drop off/pick up loops. The parent area and buses have been switched to make sure that the kids getting on and off buses are on a sidewalk at all times. It's been a learning process for parents, but will be safer for the students. This year we have switched recess to before lunch. The kids appear to be eating more and are more settled down. The teachers will pick up the children at the cafeteria and can have better information for parent's regarding their child's eating at lunch (eating or not). Carlene also reports that the administration likes to use the PTO as a sounding board for ideas or parent's perspective or to give parent's a "heads up" of upcoming events. She also states that the union30.org site is no longer, and is in the process of changing over to www.lisbonschoolsme.org. Carlene also states that Pinnacle is up and running and parent's are able to monitor their children's grades online. If you need assistance logging on, then contact the office.
Kate Race reports that Pick ups are now in the cafetorium. Parent's should line up along the wall of the stage and the teachers will bring your child to you. Then you can exit out the back door. This is a safety issue and it's important to follow these guidelines.
Nancy Craig, school nurse added the latest H1N1 and the seasonal flu. The nurses are currently in the process of scheduling clinics for both. The first clinic will be held on September 19th from 8 AM - 2 PM in the LCS Gym for the SEASONAL flu. This clinic will be for ONLY school kids. The H1N1 shots should be available around October, and currently appears that a booster shot will be required 3-4 weeks later. The H1N1 virus is anticipated to accelerate in the next few weeks, so it's important to get the shots for our children. The H1N1 tends to target ages 6 months to 25 years, as well as pregnant women. The most important defense is HANDWASHING WITH SOAP AND WATER OR WITH ALCOHOL BASED HAND SANITIZER. Nancy has asked the LCS PTO to assist with the cost of putting hand sanitizer in EACH CLASSROOM (Art, Music, etc included). A motion was made... for the PTO to give the nurses $100 for hand sanitizer to be purchased in each classroom...PASSED.
4. Monica's Moments: Monica Millhime reports that she agrees with Mrs. Iverson the school year is off to a great start. Currently there are some requests to help with the kindergarten kids in their transition into the school, as well as for the book fair next week (Thursday September 10th during the open house from 6:30-8). If you are interested please email Monica at MMillhime@lisbonschoolsme.org and she will get the schedule together. Family Movie night is September 17th at 6 PM at the Movie Theatre in Auburn. The movie is TBD. Serve New England, our food co-op for volunteers is looking for volunteers for sorting the delivery or the pick up on SEPTEMBER 26th. Please contact Monica if you are able to assist in these VERY EARLY morning hours, or for more information on what the jobs entail. Online ordering for the September pick up are due by September 14th. Monica also reports that there is a new suite of offices on the 3rd floor, where you will now find the volunteer workroom. It is located directly across the hall from Monica. She also reports she has had 2 Jr. Volunteer training sessions already, but new this year will be a Jr volunteer/Young Adult Monthly meetings so they can be involved in the meetings we are all encouraged to attend. Also please note that the volunteers from PW Sugg will have forms filled out by Monica, the parent(s) and the student. We are still working out the details about how each volunteer will finish up their day for transportation. FINALLY MAY 21st is out volunteer banquet and the theme this year is MEXICAN!
5. Old Business: Bobbi reports that the Box Tops Totals for 2008-2009 was 15232 tops of $1523.20, Mrs. Jolicouers class was the top collector with 1453.
6. New Business:
a. Bobbi : We are currently looking for someone to take over the ink cartridge/cell phone recycling program. If anyone is interested please contact Bobbi Hill.
* BOX TOPS will be kicking off with a new incentive program for grade levels. Which ever GRADE LEVEL collects the most box tops prior to the Feb. 22 deadline wins some playground equipment like jump ropes, balls, etc. The Box Tops collections are distributed as follows: 1st collection goes to staff appreciation and the 2nd collection goes in to the PTO general fund.
*Open House- Thursday September 10th 6:30-8:00. PTO will be there with a table, should arrive around 6 PM
* Committee Sign ups- These will be posted on Google docs this year, Kim will explain more later, but you will be able to access the committee sign up sheets through the PTO website or through the PTO Facebook page
* We have also established a document for the the Committee Chairperson on what to expect as the chairperson. This document will be sent to you as you sign up for events.
b. Angela: our new Vice President reports that this year, she and Bobbi have decided to split the responsibilities and she has taken on a few projects.
* Website- has been updated and Angela is responsible for the updates. It is a work in progress, so any suggestions can be addressed to Angela.
* PTO Survey- She is looking to create an online survey for parents/teachers to determine what people are looking for from the PTO, what type of events, and how much involvement they want to have with the PTO. She will be working on the details of the questions.
c. Kim: She will be following the Planet Aid recycling program this year in addition to her secretarial duties
* PLANET AID- Described briefly the yellow bins in our parking lot are for recycling clothing, sheets, linens, pocketbooks, shoes, small toys etc. Of the items we collect 2 cents per pound are given to the LCS PTO on a quarterly basis. On average we are collecting about 200 pounds a week.
* Facebook- The officers met last week and discussed creating a private facebook account to reach the parent's that might not receive the information otherwise. We discussed that there is more computer technology than ever and that creating a private account to post our upcoming events for people we designate as friends could receive information. There was some discussion among the group as to whether or not this was safe, as they felt "posers" could access our information. It was mentioned that this account shares less info than our public website that is currently accessible by anyone. Angela made a motion to table the discussion for now, and we will review this information with the police department. A sub committee will be formed to discuss the current facebook plan.
* Google Docs- First things first, in an attempt to decrease the amount of mail going into our own private emails, we decided that the LCS PTO would have their own email account. That email account is LisbonCSPTO@gmail.com. Should you have any questions related to PTO, please email the address listed and one of the officers will answer your question, or forward the info to the appropriate person. Google docs was planned into this years calendar as a way to improve our ability to access information. With Google docs, PTO members are able to access the link from their home, can sign up for committees, sign up pot luck items for staff conferences, etc. The items update when the person saves the document when they are finished. This takes out the middle man of Bobbi getting the email, and having to send out numerous updates. The document will be updated as soon as the next person opens the document. If you are having problems accessing the link, or have any questions, email the PTO and we will be happy to forward the link to you for viewing.
8. Upcoming Events:
a. AMY AUSTIN- Amy is the chairperson for Trunk or Treating. Essentially, we will set up the parking lot with participants who arrive, decorate the "trunks" of their cars to hand out candy. This area will then be closed off to traffic and the children will arrive to "trunk or treat" from vehicle to vehicle. This will take place on October 31st, cars should arrive between 4 PM and 5 PM, and then trunk or treating would occur between 5:30 and 7:30. The first meeting will be SEPTEMBER 23rd at 6:30 PM at LCS.
b. Pam Shane- Ice cream social September 18th 6-8 PM.
9. Fundraising Coordinators Update:
a. Pam Shane- This year we have started a new program called Scrips which allows us to purchase a variety of gift cards at face value while a percentage of the money goes to the PTO. The process is simple, and the proceeds vary from card to card. Orders are due the first Friday of the Month and are available for pick up the next Thursday. Look for information to come home with your child or contact Pam at PSHANELCSPTO@gmail.com or at 353-4148. Pam also spoke about a few programs Kool-aid and Caprisun have a pouch recycling program to donate 2 cents per pouch collected. Pam and Kate Race will discuss options for the program. Sunny D is also providing a free book program. LCS PTO will register for the program and ask parents to collect the sunny D labels, 20 labels=20 books, we will submit them for the teachers and to receive the books that will be age appropriate for each grade level.
