Welcome to First Grade and home of the Benton Community Bobcats! This is an exciting year for you and your child! We will be learning many new things! Your child will be bringing home many different books to read at their level from our ELL Cart. Enjoy!!! Your child will also be involved in Reading Centers and Guided Reading everyday in the classroom. They will be reading at their level, learning reading strategies, working on phonemic awareness, working on handwriting and many other reading and language arts skills. We will be busy with many hands-on math lessons and math kits this year. We are very fortunate to have Karen Phelps, Benton County Naturalist coming to see us monthly to enhance our Science program. We have Library Check Out every Thursday. Your child will check out two books from the library and can keep them until the following Thursday. We will see Mrs. Nelson the Music teacher every Wednesday and Thursday. We will see Mr. Fink the PE instructor every Tuesday and Friday. We will see Mr. Platt the Art educator every Monday and we will see Mrs. Notton-Stumpff the Library teacher every Friday. Just a personal note, I am in my 27th year of teaching. I received my BS from Mt. Mercy College and my Master's Degree from Coe College. I have an Early Childhood endorsement, Language Arts endorsement and an English endorsement. I have been in the Benton Community School District for 24 of my 27 years. First grade is so exciting! Your child will gain many new skills this year.
