Listed below are the skills your first grader needs to master during the school year. These are called our Exit Skills and the districts Standards and Benchmarks.

As you will see our school day and school year is very busy!

First Grade Math Skills

*Understands that a number is a symbol that represents a given quantity

*Orders a set of 3 numbers up to 100

*Uses counting to reach a given number

*Represents problems using numbers, manipulatives or drawing to solve problems

*Explain to others how a numerical problem was solved

*Writes numerals to 100

*Writes numerals by 2's  5's  and 10's

*Counts to 100

*Counts by 2's   5's  and 10's

*Show the skill of 1-1 Correspondence

*Makes and Extends a pattern

*Reads number words

*Orders sets

*Ordinal number

*Knows value of coins

*Identifies coins

*Addition and Subtraction of numbers to 12

*Exposure to addition and subtraction of numbers 13-20

*Understand the basic properties between circles, squares and triangles

*Understands the concepts,  inside, outside, and between

*Understands that shapes such as circles, sqaures and triangles can be found in our environment

*Understand that putting different shapes together can make patterns

*Understand that objects or events can be organized and recorded in simple graphs

*Recognize basic number patterns

*Writes a sentence that represents a real life life problem

First Grade Reading and Language Arts    

*Speaks and listens for a variety of purposes and audiences

*Have relevant contributions when prompted

*Recounts and shares personal experience on a topic at appropriate times

*Uses appropriate voice quality, volume and  eye contact

*Formulates questions about materials and situations that are not clear

*Aware of the use of complete sentences with proper grammar

*Demonstrates listening with out interruptions

*Reads for comprehension

*Uses reading strategies such as context clues, pictures and phonics when reading

*Uses developmentally appropriate sight word vocabulary

*Uses skills and strategies to demonstrate comprehension of selected readings

*Introduces a variety of literature

*Read with appropriate fluency

*Uses conventional language skills to communicate in writing

*Prints legibly

*Writes in complete sentences

*Identify the alphabet letters

*Use the phonemic awareness skills

First Grade Science

*Understands essential ideas about the composition and structure of the universe

*Understands the significance of the sun

*Develops awareness that moon appears different at various times during the month

*Understands the earth is one of several planets that orbit the sun,  the moon orbits around the earth

*Knows the general structure and functions of cells in organisms

*Knows that animals require air, water and food; plants require air, water and light

*Knows that animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use plants or other animals for shelter

*Understands basic concepts about the structure and properties of matter

*Knows that materials have different states(solid, liquid, gas) and some materials change form one state to another

*Knows that objects can be sorted and classified by different properties and characteristics

*Knows that things can be done to materials to change some of their properties but not all materials respond the same way to what is done to them

*Understands the nature of scientific knowledge and inquiry

*Understands they can learn by doing investigations and observations

*Records learning of investigations and observations

*Develops awareness of the tools that are used in the scientific process: thermometers, magnifying glasses, rulers, scales, balances and microscopes

First Grade Social Studies

*Geography: Map Skills

*Name the cardinal directions

*Locate places on a simple pictorial map

*Identify land and water representations on simple map/globe

*History: Cultural Diversity

*Recognize people from many different cultures settled in the United States

*Identify examples of American holiday traditions and compare with traditions in other cultures

*Economics

*Develop awareness of economic  concepts:  wants/needs, goods/services, consumer/producer

*Citizenship/Law

*Explain the necessity for rules at home, at school and in the community

* Awareness of career opportunities

*Global Awareness

*Awareness of how people from different cultures are alike

*Examples of basic human needs
