Mrs. Lange's November/December The month of November has arrived quickly. I would like to thank everyone for signing up and coming to conferences. During November we will be studying Native Americans. We will study tribes from different regions of North America. The tribes we will learn about are; Hopi, Apache, Pomo, Tlingit, Wampanoags, Nez Perce and Choctaw. At the end of the month the students will bring home a Native American journal to share with you. Karen Phelps the Benton County Naturalist will also be coming to talk about Native Americans. They will be doing Native American writings on our version of a buckskin. I am sure they will be excited to share these with you. We will wrap up November learning about cowboys and cowgirls. We will doing many activities that the students will bring home to share with you. In December we will start our Holiday Traditions around the world. We will travel around the world to many different countries to learn how they celebrate the holiday season. Some of the countries we will study are Mexico, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the United States. If you have anything that you would like to share with us please feel free to let me know. At the end of the unit your child with bring home a suitcase filled with information about the countries. In January we started off the month learning about winter and snow. We learned about the author Jan Brett we read many of her wonderful books. Karen Phelps the Benton County Naturalist visited to teach the students about what animals need in their habitat. She did this by reading the book The Mitten, by Jan Brett. At the end of the lesson all the students were animals and climbed into an enormous mitten. The second week of January we were learning about Hibernation and how animals adapt to their environment in the winter. They learned about some animals that are light hibernators and true hibernators. Penguins will be the next area that we cover. They will be learning many new vocabulary words that they would love to share with you. They will start off the unit carrying eggs on their feet like the emperor penguins do. Don't worry they are plastic! This month we have also started look at different math strategies to help the students become quick with their math facts. Mrs. Strempke visits the lunchroom for some fun math fact work. We have been working on counting on and counting back. They have also been introduced to the number line. In February we will be learning about African animals. The students will be bringing an animal research project home to work on. They will then be presenting these to the class. The students will have the option to pick what animal they are interested in. They will also be displayed in hallway for others to see what hard work they have put into them. As the olympics are approaching we will also be learning about the different events of the games. We are hoping to write to one of the athletes, but that is still a work in progress. At the end of February the students will be taking a short math facts test. We are looking for the students to be at 90% or better on their facts. If they are able to do this Mrs. Strempke will be taking them out for an extra recess. March is full of many different activities. We will start off the month learning about Rocks and minerals. Karen Phelps will be doing an activity on geology. They students really enjoy what she brings to share. The middle of the month we will be learning about the sun, moon and stars. They will be learning interesting facts about the sun, moon and stars. Each day they will be excited to bring home new information to share with you. Towards the end of the month we will be learning about different career options. We will learn about what they are and what types of things people do at their job. The last week in March we will be learning about Spring!!! WARM WEATHER! April we will start off learning about spring activities such as track and field, baseball and softball. The students will have the opportunity to run a relay with a baton. Towards the end of the month we will be learning about farm animals. They students always seem to have so much to share during this theme. The last week of April we will be learning about BUGS! The end of first grade will be drawing to a close. We will be doing the final testing and sending home ideas for activities the students can do over the summer. Report cards will come home towards the end of the month. The first week in May will be the last week for ELL cart. We will ask that all books be back to us by Friday, May 7th. If a book is lost please send the $4.50 to replace it.
