Welcome to Language Arts with Ms. Murphy! Week of MAY 5 - 9: -
Vocabulary Lessons 9 and 10 Quiz is FRIDAY. -
This week we begin reading Harper Lee's classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Students have the option to join a reading group in class or to read the novel independently while participating in our in-class assignments and discussions. Students will be setting their own pace for reading the novel, but are expected to finish the novel by the end of the school year. Those who finish before this time will read additional texts to enrich their knowledge of the American Civil Rights Movement and race relations in the south during the '50s and '60s. -
Attached below is a handout containing Guided Reading Questions that correspond to each chapter of the book. Students do not have to write answers to these questions, but should check their comprehension at the end of each chapter by answering the questions to themselves. -
We will discuss these questions as a class and also complete writing assignments inspired by the book over the next few weeks. -
PARENTS: I encourage you to talk to your 7th grader about To Kill a Mockingbird! This can be a very challenging text, but there is a reason this book is a classic! I hope that your child will love reading this engaging, timeless novel. In fact, if you haven't read it or if it's been a long time, I encourage you to pick it up for yourself! You're in for a treat! Ms. Murphy is a Louisville native and received her BA from Centre College following high school at Sacred Heart Academy. After her college years of playing field hockey, studying abroad, reading, writing, and developing a passion for learning, she returned to Sacred Heart where she taught Sophomores for two years. After this, she moved away from Louisville to further her own education at the University of Chicago where she earned a Masters degree in Humanities that focused on gender studies, religious studies, and art history. She was lucky enough to be invited to teach at Kentucky's Governor's Scholars Program this summer and continued her streak of good luck when she was hired to teach at St. Francis! She is very excited to be welcomed into the St. Francis community and is looking forward to a productive and fun year with the 7th grade. In her spare time Ms. Murphy loves to listen to music and go to concerts, make jewelry, and of course, read! Feel free to contact her via email at amurphy@stfrancisschool.org.
