Dear Parents,

It was great to see some of you Sunday at Border’s bookstore.  Jan Brett was delightful and full of great information.  I shared some of the experience with the whole class on Monday and was delighted to see the details that some of the other attendees were able to add to the information that I presented.  We have focused on The Mitten this week.  There are so many wonderful activities to accompany this book.

The first graders completed a list of descriptive words about mittens and then wrote some of them in a poem, only to finish it with an illustration.  They also used the book to write the order of the animals entering the mitten.  We have also been working hard to complete our mice to accompany our Town Mouse, Country Mouse writing from last week.  They turned out really cute.  The spelling words this week were long “u” words.  They were very successful with their spelling tests.  Next week we will not have spelling words due to the short week.  When we return from break, we will start with long “e” words.

The second graders also completed some activities using the mitten.  They put the animals from the mitten in ABC order.  They completed a follow the direction mitten sheet focusing on right and left sides.  They will finish with a few additional activities on Monday and Tuesday including some research on some of the animals in the mitten.  The second graders worked on “y” as a vowel this week with spelling.  Overall, they did well with this.  There were fewer mistakes this week, but some still need to be spending more time studying to prepare for the test each week.

Both groups worked on Grandparent writings in preparation for Grandparents Day.  They were thoughtful with their words and illustrations.  I think their Grandparents will really enjoy reading them.

Students are in final preparations for next weeks Parent and Grandparent performances.  Remember that Parent Preview begins at 8:45 on Tuesday for Lower School and 9:30 for Middle School, both held in the Multipurpose Room.  For the Grandparent performance on Wednesday, we request that your child wear something they might wear to a fancy dinner.  The children are really looking forward to the upcoming performances.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

                                         Sincerely,

                                         Amy Kern
