According to the American School Counselor Association, "Elementary school counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population." The school counselor works in a collaborative relationship with the student, parent, teacher, and administrator in order to help all children achieve academic success. What does the elementary counseling program consist of? School Guidance Curriculum-Each month I meet with each class for 30 to 45 minutes and discuss topics that impact the entire student body. Examples of those topics include: Academic support, including organizational, study and test-taking skills Goal setting and decision-making Career awareness, exploration and planning Education on understanding self and others Peer relationships, coping strategies and effective social skills Communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution Substance abuse education Multicultural/diversity awareness Individual Student Planning-At the elementary level student planning is done on an as needed basis. Academic planning - Goal setting/decision- making
- Education on understanding of self, including strengths and weaknesses
- Transition plans
Responsive Services - Parents, students, teachers, administrators, or the counselor can make referrals for the student. - Individual and small-group counseling
