  • Eagle Eye-Look at the Pictures
  • Lips the Fish-Get your lips ready
  • Stretchy Snake-Sound and stretch the word
  • Chunky Monkey-Look for word families or words that you already know
  • Skippy Frog-Skip it and go back when you get to the end of the sentece
  • Flippy Dolphin-Switch the vowel sound
  • Tryin' Lion-Try it again
  • Helpful Kangaroo-Ask for help (but not before you try other strategies)

Comprehension strategies are taught to help children understand text that is read aloud and independently:

  • making connections (Spinner the Spider)
  • mental imaging/visualizing (Rocky Raccoon)
  • determining importance (Digger the Dog)

  • questioning (Owl)
  • synthesizing
