Course Scope:

This one-year course has a three-fold purpose: to study major world classics, to develop a comprehensive writing style, and to view the world through literature. The literature encompasses a comparative study of significant historical, philosophical, cultural, psychological, ethical, and literary perspectives. This course will fulfill one of the four English credits required for graduation.

 

Course Objectives:

1.      To gain an insight into the universality of ideas contained in major world classics.

2.      To evaluate the significance of the past as it applies to the present.

3.      To examine literary style as it is reflected in an author’s time and culture.

4.      To appraise various ethical standards as applied to diverse cultures.

5.      To analyze the factors which motivate the protagonists and antagonists in major literature of the world.

6.      To expand individual vocabulary.

7.      To develop critical essay writing techniques.

8.      To acquire literary research skills.

9.      To write objectively and subjectively in response to selected literature.

10.  To promote respect for the ideas and values of peoples and cultures.

11.  To respond responsibly, sensitively, and with integrity to the writing and thoughts of others.

12.  To explore the socioeconomic, political, religious, and philosophical aspects of world literature.

13.  To develop an understanding of good character and ethics by responding to a wide variety of written and oral communication.
