Literacy Bags

Prior to teaching third grade (and loving every minute of it) I taught the wee little ones in first grade for seven years. Over those seven years I purchased hundreds and hundreds of picture books in order to complete my classroom library while providing enough variety in genres, text levels, and interest levels. When I made the move up to third grade I knew I wanted to supplement my chapter book library with some excellent picture books as well. While I was reorganizing my book tubs this summer, I realized that I could make better use out of some of my themed book sets. With a little inspiration from some truly dedicated teachers on the web, I put together a classroom set of literacy bags. I ended up with 20 fun themed bags for students to check out throughout the school year. Students can take these bags home for several nights at a time. The literacy bags are not homework, but a simple way to encourage a love for reading. They also provide families with new reading material to enjoy together. I purchased canvas bags on the internet and decorated them with fabric markers. These canvas bags are filled with books that all follow a certain theme. For example, one bag might have books that are all about dogs. Another bag might contain books about weather. I even managed to create a few bags that can be used as a review of science skills learned in first and second grade.
