Reading All FAIR assessments have been completed. We are in full swing with reading groups. Most nights your child will bring home a book. The book is from our reading group in class and I use it for vocabulary, comprehension, science and social studies. Writing We are busy working on correct spacing and formation of letters and writing on the appropriate lines. Students are working daily on writing a complete sentence using a capital letter at the beginning and correct punctuation at the end. Every child must be able to write his/her first and last name using ONLY a capital letter at the beginning.
Science We are starting a unit on Simple Machines. We are making a Simple Machine book in our Writing Station. We are also talking about the different types of Simple Machines during Science in the afternoon. Math We are continuing to learn to count and write by 2s, 5s and 10s. We are working on recognizing numbers to 50 and counting backwards from 25. Fall Festival The Fall Festival is October 16th. Our class will be participating in the silent auction and will be a part of the activity booths. Please begin thinking creatively about themes for baskets we could enter in the auction. All items for the silent auction must be ready and turned in NO LATER than Wednesday, October 14th, 2009. Listening/Following Directions and Verbal Control We are working very hard in the classroom and in other areas around school to improve our listening/following directions skills and our personal verbal control. Please know that everyone has room to improve in these areas. I am continuously trying to help your child improve in all aspects of his/her education. I welcome support from home in these areas. Please remember that these are graded areas in first grade.
