What Schools and Prisons have in Common
I recently took an online course at work on diversity in the workforce. It’s amazing how much our workforce has become dependent upon daily collaboration. Whether it’s with peers, managers, partners, or customers, we find ourselves working in dynamic teams to complete almost every work-stream in our daily professional lives. In this new world of work, imagine how lost we would be if we only chose like-minded, like-looking, or like-acting members of our team. We are fortunate that Victor Central School has a deep belief and programmatic commitment to diversity and inclusion. If we are to prepare our students for achievement, we should reinforce these values at home, at school, and in our extended community. So what do schools and prisons have in common according to Hollywood? I intended to do some research on IMDB.com to provide some light-hearted and maybe not so light-hearted examples from the silver screen, but ran out of time. I’m sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of movies scenes set in either school and prison cafeterias or school and prison recess yards that show what not to do. This exclusionary behavior is commonly represented by gangs in prisons and cliques in schools. My suggestion isn’t to create mandatory socialization in school; however it’s just a gentle reminder for us all to stretch ourselves in our thinking and keep an open mind to remember that all of the students in our district have special gifts to share. It’s important in school to help our children learn these values so they thrive not only at VCS, but in the new world of work that awaits all of them in the future.
